Viktor sniffed at the ground, the scent of fresh roots and grass entering his nose. This patrol thing wasn’t too hard. He just had to roam about the woods in his bear form. If he saw a person, he was only to frighten them away if they passed the barrier. He had two wolves with him, and another man was on a dirt bike.

It was easy to tell where the perimeter stood. An underlying scent started about twenty feet from his current position. It faded about another twenty feet in. He couldn’t really put a name to the old, metallic, stinging scent at first, but after a while he did. The barrier smelled like blood and hot metal.

“Takes a bit to get used to,” Galvin said as he shifted and leaned against a tree. “For those of us that grew up on the lake, the barrier doesn’t really bother us. New people, like you, tend to get that sour look once they realize what they’re smelling.”

Following suit, Viktor shifted back into his human form and looked at the pack beta. “How much do you know about the barrier?”

Galvin shrugged. “I know that Jason and Nate are linked to it, as their grandparents were before them. I know its smell, not a pleasant one, I’ll admit. But beyond that, I don’t know a lot. Shaw and the healer are about the only nonfamily members that do have any information on it. I suggest talking to your mate. Nate and his family should have all the info. You might even get lucky and get to read their text on it.”

That intrigued Viktor. If there were physical copies of the ritual and everything about this barrier his mate was tied to, he definitely wanted a look at it. “Is it true that if anything happens to the barrier those linked to it die?”

A shadow passed over Galvin’s eyes. Nodding his head yes he shifted back into his wolf form. Obviously the wolf didn’t like to talk about that part of the connection.

Sighing, Viktor called his bear to the surface and resumed his patrol.
